Our Prized Hollyhocks

These are the hollyhocks that live in our front yard! They are my favorite part of summer in Santa Fe. I guess they grow naturally around here, because they are all over town- in yards, growing out of cracks in the sidewalk, alongside buildings, etc. The neighbors don't have any in their yards, so it does look like our yard is hoarding them. Maybe they consider them weeds?

According to some quick reading, hollyhocks came to New Mexico with Spanish colonists. They seem to have spread hollyhock seed anywhere and everywhere- I like that. The name "hollyhock" comes from British Crusaders. "Holy" for the purpose of their crusades and "hock" because they used the flowers to make a salve for their horses' sore hocks. Cool!
